Orange cones might slow your trip to the airport for the next few months.
One lane is closed in each direction along Abbott Drive between Gallup Drive and Carter Boulevard, from downtown Omaha to Eppley Airfield.
Varying lane closures will continue through the end of October, according to a news release from the Omaha Public Works Department.
The closure will allow paving contractors to repair street panels up and down the boulevard. Street panels are the large squares of concrete that make up our roads.
Though the project was just announced Wednesday, it actually began last year, said Austin Rowser, the city’s deputy public works director.
“As we coordinated with the airport with their projects, we delayed the panel repair to minimize construction zone impacts,” Rowser said.

Omaha's Eppley Airfield to get $950 million makeover by 2028

Eppley Airfield is currently undergoing a $950 million terminal expansion that will boost the size of the terminal by 72%, join the current A and B concourses into a single one, and completely reconfigure the ticketing, security, shopping and eating, and baggage claim areas. The work will also add a customs area connected to two new gates for international flights.
In addition, the Omaha Airport Authority is spending $65 million to cover the terminal drive with an all-weather canopy, and $92 million to construct a new power plant.
In recent years, the airport added a new parking garage and rental-car facility and reconfigured the south entrance to the terminal drive.
That’s not all that’s happening along Abbott Drive. Owners of the city’s soccer team, Union Omaha, are seeking to build a $60 million, 7,000-seat soccer stadium at the intersection of Abbott and Gallup Drives. It would be the anchor of a $300 million mixed-use development at the corner, which is currently undeveloped.

“This will be the first thing you see when you get off an airplane and drive into downtown Omaha. We will be welcoming people to the metro,” said Martie Cordaro, president of Union Omaha, when the project was announced in January. “When they leave … this will be the final thing they see.”
With the reconstruction of street panels along Abbott Drive, there’s one thing city officials hope out-of-town visitors will see less of when they come to Omaha.
Potholes.
