What does it mean when Okta says "unable to sign in"? ›

The error “Unable to sign in” appears on the login screen. It usually shows up when the user's password is set to expire on the next login on the AD side, and the Active Directory Policy rule in Okta does not allow users to change passwords.

Usually the login page is “companyname”.okta.com. Alternatively, if you were sent an activation link email, the sign in page will be in the email body. Otherwise, contact your company's IT department to obtain the correct okta login page URL.

The Sign-In Widget is a JavaScript library that gives you a fully featured and customizable sign-in experience. You can use the widget to authenticate users on any website. Okta uses the widget as part of its normal sign-in page. If you would like to fully customize the widget, then you need to host it yourself.

In the Admin Console, go to CustomizationsBrands. Select a brand. Go to the Pages tab. In the Sign-in page section, click Edit or Configure.

What is the sign-on rule for Okta? ›

Okta sign-on policies determine who can access your org, where they can access it from, and how they must prove their identity. All orgs have a default Okta sign-on policy that you can apply to all users.

In most Okta Orgs the username is the same as the primary email address. The widget does have a password recovery flow where you supply an email address and if there is an account associated with it an email will be sent.

If you don't know your username, contact your company's help desk who set up your organization's Okta accounts. If you forgot your password, use the Forgot Password link at the bottom of the sign-in page to generate a new one. If the link isn't available, contact your IT department.

After 30 minutes, the system will auto-unlock the account.

Potential Solution: Check the Okta Verify and device OS versions to see if they may be recent updates. Sometimes, device OS updates or Okta Verify updates can introduce new compatibility issues. If this is suspected, reach out to Okta support for verification.

When you deactivate a user account, the account status moves from Active to Deactivated. Deactivated users can no longer access their assigned applications.
