    Not Eligible for GEM Fellowship

Though Duke’s Graduate School appears on a list of schools honoring the GEM fellowship, theDuke Master of Engineering Management Program (Duke MEMP) is not eligible for the GEM fellowship.

This is because Duke MEMP is a professional program offered by Duke’s Pratt School of Engineering, not its Graduate School. Also, limited available financial aid in this master’s degree program does not meet the expectation that tuition and fees be covered by the participating university.

  • Duke University Graduate School financial aid packages for domestic master students are limited to the federal financial aid offered byDirect Lending Federal Loan Programs.

In order to be considered for federal financial aid which includes federal work-study funding; you must complete the FAFSA application. FAQs

Should you answer yes to need based financial aid? ›

Need based grants examples include the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) and state-based grants. In other words, always say “yes” to grants if your child receives them on the financial aid award! However, check into the requirements for the grant.

How to answer why you need financial aid? ›

Explain the difficulties you are having meeting your needs. Describe changes in your life that have affected your ability to pay for college. For example, changes in your family's income or unexpected expenses may have caused a financial deficit. Provide evidence that you can handle your finances responsibly.

Do I have to answer all FAFSA questions? ›

If you're completing the FAFSA form on paper, the instructions will guide you towards which questions are required. If you're an independent student, you don't need to provide parental information and may skip the questions about parent household and finances.

What to do if FAFSA doesn't give you enough money? ›

There may still be ways to pay for college if financial aid isn't enough. Scholarships, grants, part-time jobs and private student loans can all help cover the gap—or you might choose to attend a more affordable college. The right path for you will depend on your college goals and financial situation.

Should you say yes on financial aid common app? ›

Every college should have its own Net Price Calculator, found on its website (federal policy ensures they have one). Try inputting your family's financial numbers to see if you qualify for aid. If you do, confidently mark "Yes" on the Common App question.

What happens if you accept financial aid but don't use it? ›

After all the bills at the school are paid, however, there might be money left over. In that case, your school's financial aid office or bursar's office will refund the money to you in a separate disbursement. The office may send you a check, or the money might be deposited in your checking account.

What to say to get financial aid? ›

Begin with who you are and where you are from, how grateful you are to have been accepted and that you are excited about the school. Be direct about what the letter is for (financial aid) Briefly talk about why the school is a great fit for you and why you need the money in a straightforward and respectful way.

Are you supposed to accept financial aid? ›

Borrow only what you need! If your living expenses are not going to be as high as the amount estimated by your school, you have the right to turn down the loan or to request a lower loan amount. Your school will tell you how to do this in the aid offer.

How to answer financial aid questions on common app? ›

Information. Students submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) should answer "Yes " to "Do you intend to pursue need-based financial aid? "

What is the most common mistake made on the FAFSA? ›

Avoid the Most Common FAFSA Mistakes:
  • Forgetting to sign the application.
  • Waiting until the last minute or submitting your FAFSA late.
  • Not knowing your state's financial aid deadline.
  • Skimming questions or dismissing directions.
  • Failing to create your FSA ID before you start the form.

Does FAFSA know how much money I have in my bank account? ›

The FAFSA will specifically ask “As of today what is the cash balance of checking, savings…” accounts for the student. Because the question is phrased “As of today” it leaves room for interpretation. If all money was pulled from checking and savings the day before the FAFSA was filed, the answer is zero.

Does FAFSA check everything? ›

Verification doesn't necessarily check the student's or parent's bank accounts. Rather, the school will ask for documentation to clarify information provided in the form. These documents can include income tax returns, W-2 forms, and 1099 forms.

How much money disqualifies you from FAFSA? ›

There is no income cut-off to qualify for federal student aid. Many factors—such as the size of your family and your year in school—are considered.

Can FAFSA pay full tuition? ›

The financial aid awarded based on the FAFSA can be used to pay for the college's full cost of attendance, which includes tuition and fees. While it is possible for student financial aid to cover full tuition, in practice it will fall short.

Why does FAFSA give me so little? ›

This can happen. The FAFSA relies on two-year-old tax information. Or your family may be facing big expenses that the FAFSA didn't ask about. If your financial aid offer seems way off, contact the college's financial aid office.

Should you check need-based financial aid on the Common App? ›

If you intend to file the FAFSA when submitting your college applications, check the box. Not checking the box, but then filing for aid, will only create confusion for the admissions office. They may reach out to you to clarify your intent, or they may simply consider you a full-pay family and not award aid.

What does "do you intend to pursue need-based financial aid" mean? ›

The term “need-based” is a designation that is based on a student's financial need. For example, a need-based grant might be awarded based on a student's low income.

Should I say yes to work-study on FAFSA? ›

Select “Yes” if you're interested in being considered for a work-study job. Selecting this response doesn't guarantee that you'll be offered a Federal Work-Study job. Select “No” if you aren't interested in being considered for a work-study job.

What is the difference between FAFSA and need-based financial aid? ›

You must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, also known as the FAFSA, to determine your family's eligibility for need-based financial aid. The information you include on the FAFSA is used to calculate your expected family contribution, which will factor into your award.
